Prepare Your Patio: 6 Ways to Prep your Backyard for the Change of Seasons

With Autumn right around the corner, it’s time to ready your backyard for colder weather, falling leaves, and evenings spent gathered around the fire pit. Taking steps to ensure that your greenery and outdoor furniture are properly prepared for the arrival of fall will make the upcoming season as stress-free as possible.

         A Chair for All Seasons

Summer may have been the season of the pool chair, but the impending drop in temperatures calls for a change in seating scenery. Summer friendly furniture should be protected with furniture covers such as an outdoor sofa cover set and stored in a safe spot throughout the fall and winter months.

In their place, consider trying the versatile stylings of chaise lounges or Adirondack chairs, which invite the guests of your backyard barbies to sit back, relax, and enjoy the crisp air of a new season. You’ll be the backyard host with the most before you know it.

        Grass is Greener

The tail end of summer is a time most crucial in preparing your lawn for whatever may be in store for autumn and winter. To prep your lawn, aerating before the weather turns is key.

Aerating your lawn involves poking small holes in the ground to make space for air, moisture, and valuable nutrients. It’s a simple way to ensure that your grass remains healthy throughout the autumn and winter months and prepares it for healthy planting come next spring.

While you can aerate your grass yourself provided you own the right equipment, it’s just as easy to hire a professional to take care of the task. No matter which route you choose, your grass will be thankful for the maintenance throughout the colder weather.

        A New Leaf

You know autumn is on its way when the trees begin their wry journey from green to gold before commencing with their eventual fall. While the warm hues of autumn are pleasing to the eye, the dead leaves that soon follow are certainly less appealing.

Get ready to keep your yard clear of fallen leaves by breaking out the rake and other autumnal accessories from storage. A vinyl tarp is one of the most invaluable tools for collecting leaves, and measures like dog crate covers can be used to keep your outdoor accessories safe from errant leaves and dead branches piling up and causing a more difficult cleanup job.

        Protected Planting

The changing of the seasons plays a huge role in the health and well-being of your backyard garden. While freezing weather and snows are on the horizon, it’s important to take steps now to protect your blooms from falling temperatures and turn your attention to autumn-friendly plants.

While covers for outdoor furniture aren’t exactly suited for protecting your plants, simple solutions for keeping your plants protected are abundant. Consider investing in protective measures such as a vinyl tarp that can be used to cover your garden beds for when inclement weather is a possibility. Insulated tarps are another great idea as they hold in heat for added protection.

Swapping out your summer blooms for seeds more appropriate for autumn is a wise move for any backyard gardener. Plants best suited for the lower temperatures and reduce sunlight of fall include Marigolds, Pansies, Goldenrods, and Purple Fountain Grass.

        Fired Up

As the centerpiece of your outdoor entertainment area, taking preventative and preparatory steps ahead of time to get your fire pit and surrounding seating area in shape for fall should be a top priority.

Prepare the seating area around the fire pit by making sure your covers for outdoor furniture are clean and on standby for when the temperature takes a dip and more protection is needed. It’s also wise to stock your fire pit area with blankets, pillows and their accompanying cushion & pillow covers, and other cozy accessories so your guests can relax in the brisk fall air.

        Grill Greatness

Getting the neighborhood together and throwing some burgers and snags on the barbie is a staple of autumn evenings. And while there’s a good chance your grill has gotten a fair share of use over the summer months, it’s always a smart idea to keep everything in check before starting a new season of searing and seasoning.

Take the time to inspect your backyard grill for any damage or wear and tear that may have occurred over the summer. A thorough cleaning using a sturdy wire grill brush and some polish solution is also in order so your grill can look its absolute best next to your outdoor sofa cover.
