‘Tis the Season for prepping home for Christmas day. It’s a time we all enjoy adorning our homes with our favourite decorative ornaments. But it’s also a time where we often make decorating mistakes which adds to cringe-worthy decor. Don’t get us wrong but there is nothing sadder than having a flop decoration which was supposed to be fun, creative and worth watching. Let bygone be bygone!

Let’s check out some potential blunders that we usually make but are never able to recognise. We hope that this article will assist you in correcting all the past mistakes and make a comeback with a bang on decoration before the Christmas countdown 2023 begins.

        1. Lacking Plan of Action

Starting your Christmas décor without a clear vision is a big mistake. Without prior planning, spontaneous ideas may develop, which isn’t necessarily a negative thing as long as an underlying theme is in place. This inclination frequently leads to haphazard and chaotic Christmas settings, resulting in the presence of mysterious artefacts that serve no purpose.

Our Recommendation: To counteract this, we recommend starting the decorating process with a well-thought-out plan. Consider your desired appearance for your home as well as the environment you want to create with your decorations.

For example, if you are looking for a custom bbq cover then a wise planner would first understand what theme you are wanting to have for your outdoor for a cohesive look.

Second, do not simply buy anytime of the year, wait for Christmas day sales. This way, you can buy more Christmas decoration items or gifts without burning a hole in your pocket.

Third, if you are hosting a Christmas day lunch 2023, we would suggest having your dishes planned to avoid any last-minute goof up.

By making these decisions in advance, you can strategically select appropriate items before commencing the decoration process, avoiding post-holiday clutter.

        2. Making Your Home Look Like Christmas Store

Making Your Home Look Like Christmas Store

Your home should not look like a chaotic burst of Christmas spirit. While getting into the Christmas spirit is lovely, there is a fine line, especially when your living area begins to resemble Santa’s Workshop. Excessive use of tinsel, glitter, garlands, and other festive decorations can turn your home like a flashy Christmas store.

Our Recommendation: Maintaining simplicity and class is a superior strategy. Use discretion while incorporating celebratory aspects that truly resonate with you. When it comes to holiday decorating tips, it’s critical to remember that a small detail may make a big impression if done correctly.

        3. Neglecting Outdoor Safeguarding

In the midst of the bustling preparations for Xmas day celebrations, it’s common to overlook the protection of your outdoor furniture.

Our Recommendation: Guarantee their longevity by investing in quality outdoor furniture covers. These protective covers preserve the overall condition of your furnishings and ensure they endure many future festivities.

Pro Tip: Elevate the aesthetic of your patio furniture, including chairs and tables, by adorning them with Christmas-themed patio chair covers and table covers.

        4. Neglecting to Measure Your Ceiling Prior to Tree Shopping

Before venturing out to choose a Christmas tree, it’s essential to gauge the dimensions of your ceiling. Don’t skip the step of bringing along a tape measure when heading to the tree lot. Relying solely on visual estimation is risky; you might end up with a tree that’s either too short or towering.

Our Recommendation: Always take precise measurements of the space between the floor and the ceiling using measuring tape. Ensure that the chosen tree’s size adheres to a specific height limit, avoiding a situation where it overwhelms the entirety of your decor.

Pro Tip: If you do not have time to buy an original Christmas tree, then you can buy an artificial tree. But make sure to check the leaves and everything. It should not look cheap and if you wish to use that for the next season, make sure to have a christmas tree upright bag or a christmas tree storage bag.

        5. Absence of Personal Touch in the Decorations

Opting for decor from large retail outlets may give off a somewhat generic, mass-produced vibe. To infuse a personalised flair without crafting all your decorations from scratch, consider enhancing store-bought pieces.

If your Christmas decorations could seamlessly fit into any household, you might be missing the mark. Whether you’re a parent, living with your parents, or in any other living situation, it’s crucial to make your decorations reflect your personal touch.

Our Recommendation: Allocate some extra time to invest in personalised ornaments, stockings, and even incorporate photos into your festive memorabilia. Engaging in do-it-yourself (DIY) Christmas decorations can be a game-changer, as the addition of a touch of character will transform your space into a unique holiday masterpiece.

Pro Tip: If you have a small or medium sized tree, you can give it a bit height with a table adorned with an outdoor table cover. Why outdoor cover? Well, an outdoor table cover will be a much safer option, as it can be cleaned easily and won’t rupture easily. However, you can use any other cover of your choice as well.

        6. You Begin Without a Clean Canvas

Starting holiday preparations without a clean slate can be counterproductive. Setting up decorations in the midst of dust and clutter may compromise the final look.

Our Recommendation: Prior to bringing in the holiday cheer, attempt to eliminate current clutter by properly cleaning your home. The difference is palpable; begin the pre-Christmas cleaning routine early for long-lasting results throughout the holiday season.

        7. All That Glitters is Gold (& that Glitter has Bonded with Everything You Own)

Glitter adds a joyous shine to your holiday decor, especially if you want to involve the kids in the decorating fun. However, if you are not vigilant, the fun can rapidly turn into chaos. Glitter gets everywhere, from furniture and carpets to clothing and hair. This is not only inconvenient, but it also results in a larger-than-expected mess.

Our Recommendation: Consider limiting your use of glitter to a few select pieces to handle this glittering challenge. This way, you may enjoy the brilliance without worrying about it expanding out of control. If you plan to use many glittering decorations, make sure they are properly placed to keep the excess shine to one location.

Alternatively, for a charming glimmer without clutter or fire concern, use flameless LED candles. Explore other festive options, such as imitation snow, Christmas lights, ornaments, and garlands, to make your home seem festive and vibrant. With a little imagination, you may create a festive environment in your home without falling victim to the perils of glittery catastrophes.

        8. Infusing too Many Random Colours

Are you prone to amassing every decoration that you hastily purchased during your shopping excursions? While it may seem innocuous, this habit can lead to major blunders in your Christmas decoration efforts.

A mixture of unplanned shades and styles in your living space might create a cluttered and disorganised appearance that is far from the warm and inviting vibe you desire.

Our Recommendation: Instead of using this technique, take a moment to plan out your colour scheme before you begin decorating. Choose a palette of a few complementary hues and stick to it. This strategic decision will create a united and festive environment in your home while avoiding overbearing or flashy aesthetics.

        9. Choosing Inappropriate Lighting

While incandescent lights are appealing, their propensity to generate heat and pose fire concerns cannot be overlooked. Furthermore, the power consumption from incandescent lights may lead to an unwelcome increase in your electricity bill, which is especially bothersome during the holiday season.

Our Recommendation: An alternative approach is to switch to LED lights. These lights not only save energy but also have a lifespan up to ten times that of incandescent bulbs, exposing up to 90% less energy. Because of their lower temperature, they are a safer option, reducing the risk of fires in your home. The added bonus is their stunning visual appeal when illuminated at night.

        10. Overpowering Synthetic Fragrance

Have you ever entered a house over the holidays only to be greeted with an overwhelming aroma of vanilla, gingerbread or winter spruce? While holiday candles are available in almost every imaginable fragrance, this does not always imply that they are a good idea.

Our Recommendation: Instead of inundating your living space with synthetic winter aromas, which can be potentially dangerous, especially for pets and people with respiratory concerns, go for a natural approach to fragrance. We recommend using a natural air freshener, which not only creates a pleasant aroma but also makes a wonderful present.

        11. Too Much Red & Green

While red and green are clearly festive, an excess of these colours can rapidly tip the scales towards tackiness. If you apply these colours incorrectly, they can turn your home from a merry paradise into an eyesore.

Our Recommendation: Break the monotony by including a variety of hues into your colour palette. Incorporate elements of white for a traditional, wintry mood, or blue and silver for a modern twist.

You can also consider mixing brilliant colours with more moderate tones such as browns, creams, and greys to establish a harmonious visual balance. This not only adds contrast but also improves the overall beauty of your holiday decorations. Unleash your imagination, because you never know what unique combinations you might come up with!

        Conclusion

Now that you know some crucial mistakes that when avoided will ensure a fun and frolic Xmas day 2023. You can use the above recommended solutions or can simply give your own twist and modify your home into something more inviting and aesthetically pleasing.
