Improving Your Home’s Security Features in 8 Easy Steps

No one wants to think about the possibility of an intrusion, but it’s better to be prepared for the worst than to be caught by surprise in an unimaginable scenario. There are many ways to safeguard from potential danger, and getting armed with several security measures will allow you to sleep more comfortably, knowing you are protected. Save the day in 2022 by safeguarding your home.

        Under Lock & Key

The first line of defense against an intruder is the front door, so it is imperative to keep it locked. Whenever you leave your home or before you go to bed, check that all windows and doors are secured.

Many people like to keep spare keys under the mat at the front, but this would be the first place to look if someone were to break in. If you choose to have a spare key for emergencies, find a location that is inconspicuous and difficult to access.

If you have recently moved into a new space, be sure to change out the locks as soon as possible to avoid any risk of a stranger having access to your home.

        Caught in 4K

If physical locks are not doing enough to help you feel safe, consider investing in a security camera system. These gadgets allow you to view any activity outside your space and will also alert you of any suspicious activity. Newer devices pair with a mobile app so you can monitor your home from your device.

Many systems have motion sensors to notify you if anyone is near your home and vocalize if someone has entered. The most important feature to look out for is the alarm that alerts you of an intruder and contacts authorities (while hopefully scaring off the unwanted visitors).

        Hide the Inside

There is no way to control the actions of others, but hiding any tempting valuables from view could potentially dissuade a robber from entering. If any large electronics like your TV, computer, or video game console are visible from your window, be sure to draw the curtains or shut your cellular shades in the evening.

For smaller items like jewelry and cell phones, keep them out of plain sight by hiding them in drawers, cabinets, or boxes when they are not on your person. Any fine glassware or dishware can be hidden under dining set covers if there is not any proper storage.

        Remember the Garage

One of the entryways that can be easily overlooked is the garage. Both the garage door and the door inside the garage should always be shut and locked.

If you drive a luxury vehicle and have windows in your garage or on the garage door, it may be worth investing in body shop curtains to hide the ride from view. Many cars (especially older models) can be hotwired, leaving them vulnerable to carjacking. Keeping the garage locked and the car hidden can hopefully work to deter any potential theft.

        Light Up your Life

Although it would be wise to turn the lights off indoors to obscure the view of any valuable items in the home, nothing scares an intruder like bright lights flooding the area around the house.

Blinding spotlights might not be an ideal aesthetic choice to ward off unwanted visitors, but tasteful fixtures around the entrance or string lights illuminating the back porch would be enough to weaken the cover of night. You could even invest in some motion-sensor lights to scare anyone creeping through the darkness.

        Thorn in Their Side

A regular wooden or wired fence might feel like a valuable investment toward security, but these features can be easily scaled or broken if need be. Look into incorporating some spikey hedges along the exterior of your household in combination with the fence to both accent the yard and act as a barrier against any trespassers.

Seeing a thorny bush obstructing their path will make any invader think twice about scaling that fence.

        Safe and Secure

For your most valuable belongings, consider getting a safe to secure their protection. They are used as a last resort in case all the other security measures have failed.

Maybe you have a family heirloom, important documents, or an emergency stash of cash. Safes can give you the peace of mind that your most prized possessions will be kept secured in the unlikely event of a burglary.

        Think Smart

When thinking about protecting your home from theft, people will normally only consider physical barriers, but there are other avenues of accessing your valuables. Nowadays, we have smart devices for most of our needs, and although they add convenience and ease to our lifestyle, they can make us vulnerable to digital infiltration.

Regularly updating your devices strengthens their defenses by fixing any potential vulnerabilities in the software that a hacker can access. Using passphrases instead of passwords also makes it extremely difficult for perpetrators to break into your network.

Keeping your home safe on all fronts will ensure your protection and allow you to feel at peace in your space.
