Ski-In, Ski-Out: A Checklist for Preparing Your Home Before Winter Holiday

What’s the perfect way to beat back the winter blues? Taking a vacation, of course! Packing up the family and going on a winter holiday is the perfect way to get a change of scenery and enjoy some much needed R & R. And since the last thing you want to have to worry about while away is the safety of your home, it’s worth your time to make a list of home security steps to tackle prior to your grand holiday.

        Security!

If you have concerns over your home’s safety, investing in an electronic security system is the best place to start. It’s never been easier to install a home security system to help keep some peace of mind whether you’re across the country on holiday or just making a quick run to the store.

There are many types of security systems for you to choose from, so be sure to do some prior research before choosing the best fit for your home. Systems with live camera feeds allow you to actively monitor your home from afar. A live camera feed allows you to check on everything, from your indoor valuables to the backyard accessories like table covers.

        Sound the Alarm

Motion sensing lights are an affordable investment that can be installed on all sides of your home, including the backyard. Flood lights provide powerful light and cover wide spaces, making them perfect for larger yards. Smaller, more inconspicuous lights can be added above points of entry for incognito motion sensing.

Setting up an alarm system is another option for maintaining your home’s safety. Install motion sensing alarms on windows, doors, and any other points of entry. When used in combination with closed circuit cameras, these alarms will transform your home into a veritable fortress of protection and give you the peace of mind you need to properly enjoy your holiday.

Check Up Before You Check Out

It may not be your first thought when creating a home safety checklist, but keeping up with home maintenance can play a significant role in keeping your home safe. Take the time to inspect your utilities and appliances are working properly to relieve any potential anxiety that may arise while on holiday. These inspections should include:

        • HVAC unit
        • Hot water heater
        • AC and heating system
        • Kitchen appliances
        • Fire/carbon monoxide detectors

If you are not utilizing a house sitter while away, be sure to switch off your heating system and unplug unnecessary appliances before heading out. Lights can be set with a timer to turn on at night to give off the impression that you’re home- thus deterring any potential break-ins. And an added bonus? You’ll save on energy bills and help your home stay eco-friendly.

        Simple Safety

Taking the time to ensure that your valuables are protected is a crucial step to take before heading out. The chances of a break-in and theft of your home may be low, but it’s always worth taking some precautions when it comes to your possessions.

Start with the basics: hide all valuables from view, whether that be in a hall closet or in an interior, windowless room. If you have a safe, utilize it for your most valuable possessions, such as social security cards, jewelry, and heirlooms. A safe will not only protect against theft, but (unlikely) natural disasters as well.

        Cover Ups

Placing garden furniture covers such as chair covers on your backyard furniture is another useful measure of theft deterrence. Utilize their tie downs for extra security and a good fit. Similarly, a tarpaulin can be used to cover storage bins, accessories, and anything else you want to hide from view.

        Sitting Pretty

One of the simplest ways to guarantee that your home is in good hands is having a friend or family member house sit while you’re away enjoying your vacation. This is especially the case if you’ve got pets, as you can save big by not having to pay for pricey boarding.

The key to a successful house sit is ensuring that you leave thorough instructions for your sitter. This should include things like checking the mail, feeding and walking pets, and putting on your outdoor chair covers or table covers in case of harsh winter weather.

        Precautionary Measures

Be sure to leave your phone number with them in case of an emergency, as well as a detailed itinerary of your travels. Let trusted neighbors know that the house will be occupied while you are away. The last thing you want is for your house sitter to be mistaken as an intruder.

If none of your loved ones are available for the task, there are a number of reputable websites dedicated to finding a trustworthy home sitter. While some require payment, there are some travelling sitters that are willing to watch your home for free while on a vacation of their own!
