The arrival of winter can only mean one thing: time to take a holiday! While many may be under the impression that the stereotypical colder months means nothing but chilly weather and huddling up at home, there are many destinations that are perfect for a warm winter holiday. Australia is filled to the brim with viable vacation spots that are pleasant to visit no matter what time of year. Finding the perfect vacation spot can be overwhelming, so we have compiled a list of must see sights in Australia to give you some vacation inspiration. After you’ve had the best time with your family during lockdown, you and your loved ones deserve a getaway, and there’s plenty to see right within your borders. From the breathtaking valleys to once in a lifetime nature experiences, Australia has it all, and these destinations are the cream of the crop.

        Hamilton Island

White sand beaches, sailboats dotting the coast, and scuba diving as far as the eye can see: these are just a handful of reasons why Hamilton Island stands out as a top tier vacation destination. After making sure your patio furniture covers are on and your cushion and pillows are covered, pack your suitcase and head for Australia’s largest populated island for the getaway you deserve. Featuring close proximity to the iconic Great Barrier Reef and other scuba destinations, Hamilton Island is a snorkeling paradise. Sailing is another huge draw for vacationers, with many sailboat crews offering private tours and day trips in the crystal blue waters that surround the island. Whether you’re a laid back beach dweller or an adventure ready scuba enthusiast, Hamilton Island has something for everyone.

        Barossa Valley

If drinking fine wines by a fire sounds like a perfect night, then Barossa Valley is the destination for you. Rolling slopes of green dot the landscape of this South Australian paradise famed for its many wineries and vineyards. Vino lovers will be thrilled by the plethora of wineries that offer unique and rare wines along with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. So take a deep breath, relax, and kick back and enjoy some much needed rest and mellow vibes among the peaceful hills of the Barossa Valley, glass of local wine in hand.

        Darwin

As the capital of the less populated Northern Territory, many may dismiss Darwin in favor of larger cities for their winter holidays. What they are missing out on is beyond compare: vibrant street markets, unique outdoor adventures, and a strong Southeast Asian influence make Darwin a truly unforgettable destination. After spending some time exploring the celebrations of Aboriginal art at the galleries intown, hit the road and make your way to the Mary River just outside Darwin. There you will be able to come face to face with saltwater crocodiles in their natural habitat. Thankfully, you won’t be swimming next to any crocs; there are a number of  specialized cruises down the river that will keep you a safe distance from any snapping jaws. When’s the last time you could say you spent the day with some wild crocodiles? This is one vacation experience that’s for the books.

        Victoria Alps

Is your idea of a dream vacation a little more action packed? Then look no further than the adrenaline junkie hotspot that is the Victoria Alps. The winter months bring ample amounts of snow cover to this Southeastern mountain range, making it the perfect time to hit the slopes. Ski resorts are abundant in the Alps and offer top notch accommodations as well as award-winning slopes where you can ski, snowboard, and even snowshoe to your heart’s content. You’ll have the time of your life in the flying flurries, and when your long day of hitting up the slopes has come to an end you’ll be able to relax by the fire in a top-notch ski resort nestled in the mountains. It’s an adventure traveller’s dream come true.

        New South Wales

Australia is filled with once in a lifetime experiences that you cannot have anywhere else on the globe. One of the most breathtaking of these is being able to whale watch off the waterline of New South Wales. Starting in May and running through November, schools of whales from humpbacks to blue whales make their way across the coast of New South Wales. This mass migration along what is called the “Humpback Highway” is the perfect time to witness one of the most amazing sights the natural world has to offer. New South Wales features a number of whale watching opportunities throughout the city of Sydney, from cruises to lookout points along the coast. No matter if you choose to venture out on an up close and personal boat trip or prefer to sit back on land and take in the views, getting the chance to see these friendly giants is a moment that is totally unique and truly Australia.
